Boring entry about real life, sorry :(

Long, long day. Due to a malfunctioning ticket machine and a very rude member of staff, I'm now about to personally test the efficiency of the trains' complaint forms. Frankly I'm not expecting much, or anything at all, but I really needed some way to vent or I'd have gone postal on the man. I really didn't need that in my day. Anyway.
I FINALLY HAVE A SUBJECT FOR MY THESIS!I also have a professor who will follow my work, but I have no idea of what to call him in English. Meep.
For those who might be interested, it's about numerical methods for approximating multi-dimensional integrals. And it's a mouthful but it's really much easier than it sounds, I'm going to read a couple of books on the subject, summarize the main existing methods and then write a program to implement one or more of them. Meaning that yes, I went the applied maths way. Blasphemy, but pure mathematicians don't do well in the real world and I have no intention of staying in academia.
It didn't even take me much to decide on a subject, the professor I had an appointment with asked me if I already had something in mind and we went over everything covered during his course. I told him integrals and he said "you could study these methods a bit more in depth, maybe since the course was just about one-dimensional integrals study the methods for more dimensions?" and I said okay and I'm going back next week to get more info and books to read.
Since I was in the building already I tried to see the other professor whose exam I need to take this month or the next, but he wasn't around. And he still hasn't replied to my mails. I later learned that he's got a story of going MIA. Derp derp.
Classmate of mine who lives closer to uni will try to get a hold of him tomorrow morning when he's got classes.
And. In more exciting news. I had tea with Paola after this whole ordeal and it came out that she's planning to go to London for a month after graduation too! My plan was to stay for the 4-5 months between graduation and the start of autumn semester (May to September), get a temp job and all, and it'd be great to go together with the group of April graduates. Now that's some good motivation for me to get all exams and thesis done in time.

P.S. your tags are genious ♥

Date: 2010-11-09 08:27 pm (UTC)Thanks, I don't really know about other countries but it's kind of a big deal so... :D
Haha, the tags! They're completely out of my control.

Date: 2010-11-09 08:26 pm (UTC)2. OMG, subject sounds... um... don't understand a thing. :D But I love maths and it sounds quite exciting. :D
3. I'll probably go to UK next summer/autumn (probably from August until December). See you there? XD

Date: 2010-11-09 08:29 pm (UTC)Yeah, I know the feeling, I had a friend graduate in Biology and I had no clue what all of her thesis was about.
And that sounds brilliant! XD One more reason for me to put the plan into action.

Date: 2010-11-09 09:34 pm (UTC)I FINALLY HAVE A SUBJECT FOR MY THESIS
YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW JEALOUS I AM OF YOU RIGHT NOW. I am struggling, finding a freaking title for my dissertation. Okay, it's due in January. But that's less than 3 months from now and just. UGH. I do not know what I should write about. Ugh.
Lol. What is that topic? I took A-level Pure Mathematics, thank you very much. Applied Maths is like. Uhm. No thanks. So much like Physics. And I hate Physics. Kbye. Hahahahahahaha.
London is an amazing motivation hahahaha.

Date: 2010-11-09 10:22 pm (UTC)Haha don't be jealous! The subject is literally all I've got and I chose it kinda sorta at random.
FFFFFF WUT I ABHOR PHYSICS. DNW. Applied maths is more like engineering. So okay I'm still whoring myself out but at least not to the physicists!

Date: 2010-11-10 06:29 pm (UTC)But at least you have one! That's one problem out of the way. Hahahaha. Ren 1, universe 0.
PHYSICS. THE BANE OF MY SCIENTIFIC LOVING LIFE. I had it for general science in first year high school. I sucked at it hahaha. And I never get it. Ever. So I did everything I can to not ever take it again. Not in high school. Definitely not in university hahahahaha. You can do better than physicists, bb! :D

Date: 2010-11-10 09:39 pm (UTC)My mythology, it totally makes sense.Haha I'm sooo envious of you, I had physics for like 3 years in high school, always mandatory, and in uni I never voluntarily chose physics courses but there's still like 4 mandatory exams. Unfair. I always had crappy teachers too so it's not as I'm actually learning stuff. It'd be more interesting if this had a practical purpose like building a time machine.

Date: 2010-11-10 01:14 am (UTC)I agree with you on the applied maths route. One of my attendings last month has a son in pure mathematics, and she said the only viable route he could find was in academics. Either way (pure or applied maths), props to you!! Maths and I don't get along, and I'm always impressed with those who understand it well!
I also have a professor who will follow my work, but I have no idea of what to call him in English. Meep.
At my school, they were called "thesis advisors." *shrug*

Date: 2010-11-10 10:37 am (UTC)To be fair, it seems only about 30% of graduates go on teaching or stay in uni, the others all find other jobs. But since those jobs have to do with applied maths anyway, I figured it'd be better to go ahead and choose it as my curriculum.
In my experience most people who have problems understanding maths just didn't have the right teachers. I've been lucky because I always had an interest in the subject and my parents are engineers so I could always ask them for help, otherwise I'd have had problems with some subjects that my teacher couldn't get me to understand.
And thanks, I'll keep that piece of vocabulary in mind! :D

Date: 2010-11-13 02:07 am (UTC)Exactly!
just didn't have the right teachers
I agree with that. I hated all of the books I read in one of my English classes. A few years later, I reread some of those books, and they're some of my favorites. Our teachers have a lot of influence over us, but it's a two-way street--bringing a horse to water and all.
Lucky, indeed! :) My parents are biochemists, but the one time I asked them for help with my bio homework, I ended up getting most of the questions wrong.
