And speaking of memes, since I was talking about this with Jen earlier:
1. Make a list of 15 characters.
2. SHOW THAT LIST TO SOMEONE AND YOU DIE.
3. Let the people of your FList comment one (1) number and one song they've chosen.
4. WITHOUT SHOWING YOUR LIST, write something about the character, using the song to inspire yourself.
5. You done? Good. Now you can go and show which character or couple it was.
6. It's a meme with a twist!!

#3 - Ianto Jones (Torchwood) - I'm Yours
Anyway, the fic turned into Ianto/Jack but it was inevitable considering the lyrics. "And somehow growing old feels fine", "You healed these scars over time", "The day news came my best friend died / My knees went week and you saw me cry / Say I'm still the soldier in your eyes "... I could quote the whole thing. Anyway. You should also know that months ago I decided that I'm Yours Tonight by The Academy was Jack's song so... yeah, freaky coincidence.
Thanks for giving me such an awesome song! And sorry again if you don't know the fandom.
---
Ianto never thought he'd be one of those people who looked at their face in the mirror each morning with growing panic, afraid to see the first white hair or line at the corner of his eyes. But lately he does, unfailingly, every single day.
So far he hasn't noticed any signs of aging. There is no reason why he would, he's not even thirty yet. That's what he keeps repeating himself. It's not as reassuring as it should be, especially when he remembers that thirty years are nothing to Jack.
It shouldn't bother him as much as it does. After all, he's the one who was wishing for death, time and again during those dark months in his life when everything seemed so pointless and even breathing was a constant pain.
The only thing that had stopped him from pointing a gun at his own head and pulling the trigger had been Jack. Always Jack.
At first because Jack was in charge of Torchwood and could give him access to the technology he needed. Then because he wanted his revenge against Jack for ruining his life. And in the end because Jack was, well, Jack.
Ianto is less surprised by the fact that he'd fallen in love with Jack than by the fact that it has taken him so long.
In a way, it's perfect. Jack will never die. Ianto will never have to go through the same pain that was losing Lisa. Jack will still be here, alive and unchanged, in thirty, fifty, a hundred years' time.
On the other hand, Jack will never die. He'll still be here, long after Ianto and everyone else is long gone. He has no idea how Jack can stand that, and sometimes he looks into Jack's eyes and sees something that tells him that Jack has no idea either.
Ianto looks in the mirror, but he doesn't know what to do when he'll start showing signs that he really is aging. Every time he's gathered enough courage to break the subject with Jack, he has brushed it off saying it will be fine.
Ianto isn't quite so sure about that, but he used to think he'd never fall in love with anyone else after Lisa either.
And sometimes when they're together it seems as if time is stopping, even if just for a minute, and in those brief moments Ianto thinks that maybe, just maybe, everything will be fine.

And wow. That's some song. This is going to be crazy!
#5 - Arthur (Inception) - Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch me
Point number one: it had been Eames's idea. None of Eames's ideas were ever good, especially not for Arthur, and he really should have learned that by now.
Point number two: he hadn't even known what he was getting into. When he had agreed to meet Eames later that night because the other man "needed to show him something of vital importance", Arthur shouldn't have let Eames talk him into agreeing without even know what this vitally important thing was.
As it turned out, it was a midnight show of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Which brought Arthur to his current predicament and point number three: it had been Eames's idea, and none of Eames's ideas were ever good.
"Vital importance," Arthur repeated for the third time in as many minutes, because he couldn't quite believe he had been dragged in this downtown theater on the outskirts of San Francisco to watch some musical about a transvestite from Transsexual Transylvania.
Eames smirked at him and offered him the popcorns, which Arthur disdainfully refused. He had serious concerns about the hygiene standards of this place.
"By the way," he hissed, "why is nobody complaining about the people throwing popcorn at the screen?"
"You're complaining," Eames pointed out and Arthur rolled his eyes and fought the urge to punch him when he added, "Are you kidding? Do you have any idea just how difficult it was to find a theater doing a honest-to-goodness midnight show?"
"Why did you bring me here in the first place?" Arthur asked.
"You told me you'd never seen Rocky Horror," Eames replied with a shrug. "I wanted to rectify that mistake."
Arthur was about to protest but Eames shut him up by stuffing a handful of popcorns into his mouth. "Shush," he said. "This is my favorite song."
While Arthur was coughing and trying not to choke on a particularly nasty popcorn kernel, Eames slipped one arm around Arthur's shoulders.
Then he actually leaned sideways and started humming along to the song. And Arthur wasn't exactly a blushing virgin, but he could feel Eames's breath on his neck. He'd have sworn that the other man was smirking.
Point number four: it was lucky that there wasn't enough light for Eames to see that Arthur was blushing furiously. But Eames probably knew anyway.

#1 - The Doctor (Doctor Who) - If I Could Turn Back Time
So you totally picked the Time Lord with the time travelling machine for this one! I don't know if you're a Doctor Who fan, but this is what you got. :)
I more or less took this as a free pass to look into the Doctor's brain. Whee!
---
Out of all the people in the universe, the Doctor should know about time travel. Time Lord, last of them, it comes with the job description. Well, not a job per se, more like a hobby. A very absorbing, full-time hobby that threatens to kill him constantly (and sometimes has). Nevertheless.
The Doctor knows all about time, thank you very much. Wibbly wobbly and everything. He might not be good at explaining it, especially to humans, especially when there's something about to blow up and not much time to get into the tricky details of non-linear time and space, but it's all very clear in his mind.
Fixed points and points in flux. It's as simple as that for him, and if someone were to ask him what was the difference he wouldn't be able to explain. People have asked, actually. They keep asking all the time. As far as the Doctor is concerned, they might as well be asking why the sky is blue instead of purple. It just is.
(Okay, the Doctor would be perfectly able to explain that it's because of the sunlight scattering in the air. And it's not even true of all planets, not even most planets, but 21st century humans are so self-absorbed. Maybe the metaphor was not completely correct, but it doesn't matter since most people wouldn't understand anyway.)
So, the Doctor knows only too well that he can't just hop on the TARDIS and go back every time he makes a mistake. All kinds of terrible things could happen, such as dying or a couple of planets blowing up. And that's just the best possible outcome.
Of course this is the simplified version that he gives to his friends to keep them from getting any strange ideas. One of them meeting their past or future self, now that could really make the universe implode. They couldn't handle it. Not like the Doctor does.
For all his talk about not intersecting his own timeline, the Doctor has been able to meet himself on several different occasions without suffering anything worse than mild embarrassment at his own past fashion choices.
(Well, apart from that occasion, that had been a close one. And that other time, but he's not going to bring it up now. Or ever again. In fact, let's just forget it happened. Except that it'll happen again in his future...)
The point is, in many cases the Doctor could go back in time to fix his own mistakes. Sometimes he's so close to do it, he just wants to ignore all consequences and go. He never does, but he always ends up regretting it, imagining all the possible scenarios in which things things went a different way.
And he knows that in some other parallel universe things did go differently, and maybe there's another Doctor who went back and now is happier. Or possibly dead. He'll never know. He's decided to play by the rules.
At least for most of the time. Then there's times when he just doesn't care and goes back to watch the moon landing four times in a week, standing side by side with himself and grinning like a loon while humanity takes its first steps into space. He doesn't regret a single one of those trips.

#7 - Kate Beckett (Castle) - All the Right Moves
Within a minute she's picked up her jacket and is walking towards the elevator.
"Ryan, Esposito," she calls over her shoulder, interrupting the two detectives' conversation about the merits of Chinese versus Indian cuisine. "We've got a case."
They nod grimly and get up from their desks. Ryan checks his phone (Beckett knows he'd been hoping to get off early and meet with his girlfriend) but doesn't say anything.
Castle's head pops out of the break room. "A case?" he repeats. "Another one?"
"You don't have to come along, you can just go home and rest," Beckett says, pressing the elevator's 'down' button.
"Oh, no," Castle says quickly. "Nononono!"
He rushes to get his jacket and almost gets trapped between the elevator doors in his haste not to get left behind.
Ryan and Esposito give him a meaningful look and shake their heads slowly. Beckett just purses her lips.
If she could choose, right now she'd be at home with a bubble bath instead of on the way to the third murder scene in as many days. She can't understand Castle's enthusiasm for violent crimes. She's given up trying to stop him from following her around, she just wishes she knew why.
Beckett's not stupid, she knows what everyone at the precinct is saying, but she's not quite ready to believe that Castle is some sort of stalker with a crush who follows her around because he's too stupid to ask her out like a normal person.
Then again, Castle is very much not a normal person. Anyone who hangs around crime scenes on a daily basis must be a bit crazy, and that applies to those who do it for a living too.
Beckett rubs the heel of her hand into her eyes. Sometimes, this job gets to her. She gets to see people at their worst, meets the worst of society, visits to the worst places in the city. And somehow it's never enough. There's always cases they have to give up on, victims they aren't even able to ID, murderers who avoid a trial because there's just not enough evidence no matter how hard they look.
Even when they manage to close a case there's always another one waiting. There's just no winning. And it's not as if this came to Beckett as a sudden revelation, but sometimes on a rainy Thursday afternoon she feels like throwing her badge against the wall, or cry a bit, or both.
It lasts for all of three seconds. Then she looks around at Ryan, Esposito and Castle who are sharing some stupid joke. All right, she tells herself.
"All right," she says, stepping out of the elevator. "Preliminary report says the victim is an unknown male..."
