Day 02 - What was your very first ship?
Day 02 - What was your very first ship?
Uuuh actually I have no clue about this one. I was a real tomboy, so for the longest time I couldn't care less about who was kissing who. I don't even recall what was my first fandom. Probably Harry Potter, but I was more into these semi-RP communities where you made up yourMary Sue OFC to interact with other Mary Sues OFCs and since there were no canon characters around there wasn't any romance either. Anyway. I read the books for the first time when I was 11 and CoS had just been released in Italy (and wow, it makes me sad that I had to stop and think about which was the second book, I used to know it off by heart). So I realized that Ron and Hermione were going to end up together, because JKR's hints were frankly anvil-sized, but I was more concerned about the Quidditch Cup and the spells and interesting stuff like that. I don't think I ever read HP fanfiction until more recent years. There's also the fact that I wasn't very good at English yet and read very, very slowly.
So now that we've established that my first ship wasn't from HP, what else did I read/watch around that period?
I remember I was quite into an Italian community for One Piece before starting high school. I found out about fanfiction and wrote my first multi-chapter story, which is also the only multi-chapter story I ever wrote, which also featured a purple-haired Mary Sue. I'm quite proud of that little piece of crap, though I haven't read it in years because I cringe at the thought. Among these feats I also read quite a lot of other fanfics, which were probably crap since I remember they were all in script format. But I remember one that was almost literate and it was about Zoro/Nami. At the time I thought they were a strange pairing, because if two of the Strawhats ever got together it should have been Sanji/Nami.
So there you have it, my first ship was (probably) Sanji/Nami from One Piece.
Whew, that was a long trip down memory lane! I even had a favourite fanartist, but of course there's no way I could find her site after all these years. Pity. I remember she made very pretty pastel drawings.
Now something interesting would be remembering which was my first slash pairing, since thanks to living in such a heteronormative country it took me ages to realize that two boys or two girls could be paired together. It was quite a shocking revelation. I think credit goes to either CLAMP or Kazuya Minekura. CLAMP for being, y'know, CLAMP, and going rather heavy on the subtext so that even I could pick it up. And Kazuya Minekura for writing such wonderful characters, all of them male (apart from Kanzeon Bosatsu, and I'm not talking about Kanzeon Bosatsu because I have problems with pronouns where Kanzeon Bosatsu is concerned) and therefore forcing me to consider that, hey, Gojyo and Hakkai look good together...
Looking back, it's kind of shocking to think how much fandom has impacted me, even on big stuff like equal opportunities, LGBT rights and my view of religion. Makes me afraid of who I'd have become if I was just stuck in a small community with no chance of discussing things with people who had different views.
