renrenren3: (Merlin * Lady Vivian)
So I actually had a pretty good day after my previous derp-filled entry, up until a couple of minutes ago when I finished the third fic of the day and my f-list told me that Yahoo is shutting down delicious. To which I can only say, why?
I've exported my bookmarks and waiting for fandom to reach some general consensus as to where to migrate. I liked delicious because almost everyone had an account and it was easy to save, tag and rec fics. Damn you Yahoo for killing off services that actually work.

I started this morning with a file full of random bits of characterization and vague mentions of what would be going on in the fic in no chronological order, and the finished fic was betaed and submitted to the archive before dinner. Maybe karma thought it was time I found a competent beta again. Dunno.
But whew, that's one more story done and I like the result. And that's the last I'll say about Yuletide before 2011, otherwise I'll slip and reveal what I wrote.

Also: song meme, v. Merlin.
Gwaine(/Lancelot[/Gwen]) - Every little thing she does is Magic by The Police [ profile] redjumper
Vivian(/Morgana) - Falling by Florence + The Machine [ profile] teaboytoaliens

It's... probably best if you don't ask me about the pairings. Gwen isn't actually in the first one but I needed a "she" somewhere. Also I made myself sad by making Viv sad.
(Only 2 fics to go now.)
renrenren3: (Text * Call Batman)
Not too long ago a certain lady asked me to write Inception fic. I told her it was probably a bad idea, but did it anyway. Yes, obviously it was a bad idea.
Two song meme fills and one tombola prompt from which you can easily deduce that:
1) I multiship;
2) I love Ariadne;
3) I can't write Ariadne.
Ergo, I'll probably stick to Arthur/Eames in the future and cry a little.

Arthur(/Eames) - Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch me for [ profile] darkmagic_luvr
Ariadne(/Arthur) - Servant of Evil for [ profile] mizunosakura
Grass green for the prompt... grass green (Inception, Ariadne)

All PG-rated and very much drabblish. The bulk of my writing effort today was the epic steampunk saga. I've written the opening scene, or at least part of the opening scene. It's 1,500 words where nothing at all happens. I'm all, man, you have to go out there and get shot! And my characters sit around making idle conversation and refuse to get the plot going. WTF.

I think I need a beta. Yesterday I ordered my sister to read my latest opus and find some damn mistakes to correct but she said it was all fine by her. NOT HELPFUL DUDE. I know I barf mistakes all over my stories. It's fine for short pieces but if I'm really going to write the epic steampunk saga I need to get off my butt and start doing things like proofreading and possibly find one of those anal betas that complain about every sentence they read. Why do I never come across those?

Spoilerpalooza. )

In other news, I joined [ profile] maridichallenge (nah, totally not stalking anyone!) and I'm taking part in their annual tombola, which is the Italian version of bingo. Or is bingo the English/American version of... well, whatever.
The chance of customizing my card with trendy colours and a 1-in-6 chance of landing the "duck-shaped vibrator" prompt lured me in. So now I have yet another list of things to write, but they're all pretty awesome. Apart from the mpreg prompt that had me go "FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!" and complain for an inordinate amount of time, but then it was the first one I wrote because I'm insane like that.

Worse than gay porn (SPN, Dean and Sam, ~2,000 words, PG-13)
I wrote mpreg without actual mpreg. But it still warrants a mpreg warning for discussing mpreg. I still find mpreg awfully icky but now I can't stop saying mpreg.

Click my awesome card for embiggening!

Click this cut to figure out what the prompts are! )

Also, I finally closed voting at [ profile] camelot_fics so I can de-anon for my own entry:
Fancy clothes (Merlin, Arthur and Merlin, ~600 words, PG)
Now... onwards to that Layton ficlet that's been plaguing me!
renrenren3: (Text * Call Batman)
I know I'm breaking the unwritten rule about not making two posts in the same day, but this is kinda big. Tonight at dinner my mum said that, by the way, she and dad were thinking about buying a house. Which doesn't really come as a huge surprise since I know they'd been talking about it and I'd seen a flyer from the agency floating around, but I had no clue my mum was so much into it.

She has already seen the house, and so has my dad, my uncle and my granddad. And she thinks there would be a lot of remodeling to do, especially with the bathrooms, but my uncle says it can be done relatively easily. (He's... I don't honestly know, a mix between a plumber and an electrician? He fixes houses for a living so he'd know about this stuff.)

I've got a feeling mum likes this place. Last time she said there was a house they might want to see, the place was a total dump and she never brought it up again. This was maybe two years ago. Now she just wouldn't stop talking about it. I kind of want to see the place for myself now since it's sounds ridiculous. For example: it's on four five floors. I thought she was joking around but she really wasn't. From what I understood there's just a couple of rooms on each floor so... tall and narrow house. House, not even apartment, and I think mum's fixated on the fact that it has a garden. She always wanted more space for her flowerpots.

This place has, from the bottom up: a cellar with a vaulted ceiling, laundry/spare bathroom + garage, kitchen + living room, master bedroom + huge bathroom, two bedrooms right under the ceiling. Plus the garden, which is more of a courtyard since it's paved with flagstones, but they can be removed and there's ivy on the walls and an old oven that used to be for making bread like two hundred years ago. And a fireplace in the living room. And then we ran away because the more mum kept talking the more things were getting ridiculous and I was afraid she'd tell me that one of the wardrobes is the door to Narnia.

So. I'm all for changes, in general principles, I didn't think I'd have to move before I got my degree and moved away, but if my parents decide to, so be it. But this time I'm lobbying to give my brother the single room, it'd be pointless for me to get it since then they'd have to rearrange everything when I leave in just a couple of years. Besides, this way my sister ends up with the largest room, and I like my sister much better than my grumpy brother who doesn't even want to watch Glee. Obviously this might end up being just a castle in the sky, but still.

I also braved the snow storm outside (which totally stopped once I got back home, of course) and went to see my thesis advisor. I completely bullshitted about reading both books he gave me, I skipped a hundred pages or so because it was kind of deathly boring so I just flipped through all of the proofs of sections 5 and 6. But apparently I can bullshit well, at least with him, since he told me to make a list of formulas that I could study for my thesis. Which I'll do, after tomorrow's Christmas (we're early this year, apparently) dinner with the rest of the class.

First things first, bask in the awesomeness that's the newest Thrones trailer. One minute long and a bunch of new footage, though of course the most interesting bits are the ones that flash past in a split second. And there should be a 15-minutes "behind the scenes" special next week that I'm really looking forward to.

It's actually happening. Spring 2011. SPRING 2011.

My new to-do list. )

Of course there's also the song meme that never ends. Since last time I posted about it I wrote a couple more ficlets:
Jean Tannen (Gentleman Bastard) - Give Us A Little Love for [ profile] amaranthine3
Castiel (SPN) - I won't say I'm in love for [ profile] batgurl88

And the more attentive of you might have noticed that I took the Merlin/Inception crossover off the list. That's because [ profile] frantic_allonsy wrote it already. So... yeah. Not the very same plot I'd have written, but it's not as if I'd have ever gotten around to writing it. And they did. And it was epic.
So yeah. Go read it.

Also if you could stop by [ profile] camelot_fics and vote for our first challenge, there's a lot of cute entries and they're all short so it shouldn't take you much. I could use some more votes.
renrenren3: (Default)
The poll did, incredibly, help me get things done! I finished both the regular and the bonus challenges for this month at [ profile] thegameison_sh and wrote a couple more ficlets for the song meme:
Ianto Jones (Torchwood) - I'm Yours by The Script for [ profile] denija
The Doctor (Doctor Who) - If I Could Turn Back Time for [ profile] ladybracknell

Also, hell yes! The Vampire Diaries is starting to get interesting. For the first time I'll be looking forward to the next episode which is... 1x05 I think. Twilight references ftw.

And I went back to [ profile] westerosorting after the longest hiatus ever, I missed that comm. ASOIAF used to be my only fandom last year, I'm not sure how I managed that with my short attention span. Still, it was fun. And I might even get to join the RP again with Petyr. ♥

To-do list )
renrenren3: (Merlin * woo)
Reveals went up at [ profile] merlin_muses, so I can say it now: mine was How To Woo Your Manservant. Though I think it was obvious, what with the abuse of the word "woo" and the reference to chicken and destiny in the summary. I'm predictable.
I finally got to post it under my own name then, and as soon as I'm done with the cover there will be a soundtrack for it. Featuring Lady Gaga, so you know it's all srs bsns and stuff.

Thing is, after all fics were posted I went back and checked, and nobody wrote the fic for Merlin and Morgana falling under a love spell. It was actually my first choice but someone claimed it before me. And then they didn't write it in time. I was really looking forward to it, but meh. At least I got to write Woo.

And now, kind of late but here's the last part of the fic recs. (The first two are under my fic recs tag, since my tags are organized, really. I just like to give them confusing names.) Just one because... I don't know, either I've become incredibly picky in the last month, or all the best fics were posted at the beginning and the last ones didn't live up to their standards.

Deny Thy Father * Arthur/Merlin * R * 26,624 words
Modern AU. Arthur walks out from his society wedding and Uther cuts him off from the inheritance. Arthur moves in with Morgana and her "plebeian" flatmates and falls in love with Merlin. You know the story. It's a decent read, though the plot isn't exactly original, it wins points because of the cat.

I can't believe it's over. Sadface. I'm even all caught up with Glee. ffff Kurt why so adorable? No idea what I'm going to watch next.

FIRST OF ALL WELCOME EVERYONE FROM THE CRAZY [ profile] merlin_land_ot FRIENDING MEME! I'm totally friending everyone I wasn't already friends with because it was the greatest thing ever.

And speaking of memes, since I was talking about this with Jen earlier:
1. Make a list of 15 characters.
3. Let the people of your FList comment one (1) number and one song they've chosen.
4. WITHOUT SHOWING YOUR LIST, write something about the character, using the song to inspire yourself.
5. You done? Good. Now you can go and show which character or couple it was.
6. It's a meme with a twist!!

Yeees, it's the one I've already posted before but since I only got one reply (#13) and I've friended like 12 new people since then I figured it might be worth a shot to try and get your interest again. The fandoms are Merlin, Doctor Who, Torchwood, SPN, The Big Bang Theory, Inception, ASOIAF, Temeraire, Locke Lamora. And also Castle which I totally forgot about.

#14 is still open! Not that you probably know that character anyway. :|

List! )

And no, I still haven't watched Merlin, though I did watch SPN but I keep forgetting to post about it because I find the vampire plot kinda boring. Also watched Children of Earth today. Russel T. Davies owes me three hours of my life back. And I'm just 4 episodes away from finishing Doctor Who S5, what am I going to do after? D:

Oh, I see it's midnight right now. Here, have a totally useless manip:
renrenren3: (PW:AA * scientific Ema)
One more exam down! I also got the lowest score of my career so far, but it's physics so who cares, really. As long as I can move on to more interesting stuff now. There's some talk of a geometry exam around the end of November, so I suppose that's my next short-term goal. That exam's a bitch, I've failed the written part thrice already and it's just par for the course. And I just mailed my favourite prof and asked about doing my thesis with him. I've heard he's got lots of students already but I'm crossing my fingers since I really liked his course.

Hey, wasn't I supposed to be getting a break or something after this exam?

ETA: He said no. Damn, I should have asked him last month, a friend of mine asked and he still had time then. Moving on to plan B. But first I have to figure out who's plan B.
renrenren3: (Merlin * gif)
Dreadful news. I have all the symptoms of, gasp!, the common cold. Runny nose, sore throat, fits of coughing, clammy hands... It's terrible. I look awful, but fear not: I have hopes that I might survive.
I'm still feeling incredibly crappy but at least I don't have a high fever like dad. He's been home all week, alternating between sleeping on the couch and calling his colleagues to complain about his health. (My favourite bit is when he complains about having a sore throat in a VERY LOUD VOICE while I'm trying to study.)

Also, I have a new mouse. I'm thankful to my mum for getting me a present I'm likely to use instead of a fugly sweater or something like that, but she picked a cute one instead of one comfortable to use. I'll probably end up going back to my old one, which works just fine. With this one, I keep misclicking like, er, like someone who misclicks a lot.

Anyway, I haven't been posting in a while but hopefully this makes up for it. Over at [ profile] merlin_muses posting continues, and with 14 stories posted already out of 56 I thought it was time to rec some of my favourites. They're all Arthur/Merlin, but I swear I did read the others too (apart from Arthur/Gwen, obviously). It's just that Arthur/Merlin fics are more than all the others put together. And, okay, I might also be biased. Hush.

With This Ring * Arthur/Merlin * NC-17 * ~10,000 words
One of my prompts, and I'm so happy it was picked up! Uther is enchanted and forces Arthur and Merlin to marry, immediately. Arthur and Merlin have to go along with it until they find a way to reverse the spell.
This story is all sorts of adorable and sweet and funny. And the last scene between Uther and the boys is priceless. Just... read it ♥

The Apprentice's Tale * Arthur/Merlin * NC-17 * 10,500 words
Modern AU. Merlin and Arthur are both members of the Society for Creative Anachronisms. (If you don't know what that is, don't worry, I didn't either. The author provided helpful links but in short, it's people dressing up in medieval dresses and doing medieval-style stuff like banquets and tourneys.)
Anyway, Merlin and Arthur meet at a week-long camping event, they start off by hating each other and they end up... not hating each other. Obviously. There's also cameos from many other characters: Gwen, Lancelot, Morgana, Gaius...

A Time for Reflection * Arthur/Merlin * PG * 4,573 words
Around harvest time, the tradition of countryman favours cause Merlin to miss home. He makes one himself not intending to give it away, and Merlin has to face his feelings when he finds Arthur with the favour. The Prince wasn’t supposed to find it nor does he know the meaning behind it.
A sweet story. Gets a bit repetitive at the end, but Merlin's adorableness makes up for it.

The Prince and his Catservant * Arthur/Merlin * NC-17 * 8,212 words
Merlin gets turned into a cat and Arthur has to take care of him until the spell wears off. The best part is Arthur imagining what cat-Merlin is thinking. Lovely story, though the ending is a bit abrupt.
renrenren3: (Merlin * woo)

Commentfic meme. Funfunfun. Blame it for this entry's shortness, I've been writing for that instead of finishing this meme. Oh well. I also think it's the first time in months I wrote het. Kinda sorta.

Day 29 - What ship had the best proposal?

Ed/Winry from Fullmetal Alchemist.

"I'll give you half my life, so give me half of yours!" Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
It helps that I've loved them from the get-go and I'd been praying for them to get together for about half the series. And Ed delivered an awesome proposal and they had epilogue babies and all was well with the world. ♥

Day 30 - Your favorite ship forever and ever and ever?

Merlin/Arthur. Three months isn't much to decide and I don't know if it'll be forever and ever because I don't see the future, but I do love those boys and given the extent to which they dragged me into the fandom I don't think I'm very likely to find another favourite ship any time soon. There isn't any other pairing I've written so much fic about, and soon there won't be any other pairing I've read so much fic about. There's just something about them. Ask me the same question next year and we'll see, but for now... I'm off writing more fic.
renrenren3: (Default)
Okay, now that my ehpeek literary endeavour is done, I can return to the usual memeage. I think I'll do two of these every day from now on, since they're long overdue and I'm getting bored. WTF short attention spam.
But before that let me tell you about this season's anime, or at least those I watched so far. Kind of spoilery, but it's just the first episode of each series anyway. But first some random linkage.

There's more behind-the-scenes videos from HBO and I think it's the first time I've been so interested in an elevator.

Plus Colin and Bradley are being ridiculously adorable, again. My favourite part is Colin saying "dragonfruit" and Bradley snorting with laughter. So much love.

And the 2 minutes trailer for the SPN anime. Engrish Carry On, some interesting action scenes, Dean looks like Tristan from Yu-Gi-Oh but I'll try to overlook that for the sake of more monster hunting.

Autumn 2010 anime
(or, having big-name seiyuu and sparkles won't redeem your crappy series)
((in some sort of order from awesum to crap))

Cut because I'm verbose. )

Day 21 - A pairing you like and no one else understands why?

Ciel/Finny from Kuroshitsuji. Originally created because I was growing tired of Sebastian/Ciel, especially with creepy!pedo!stalking!abusive!Sebby, but the more I think about it the more I wish someone had written it. They seem like they'd be adorable together. Finny is fiercely attached to Ciel, I could totally see him going all protective if his master was in danger. Sebastian would have nothing on an enraged Finny.
The sad thing is, the Kuroshitsuji fandom is in a sad, sad state. Here's some stats from The Pit. About 3,000 Kuroshitsuji fics (all ratings), 2,300 in English. Out of those, how many with Finny? 36. Thirty-six. And this is Finny, someone who's been around since chapter 1, fairly relevant to the plot, has been to a greater or lesser degree in every story arc. TA grand-total of two of these fics (both one-shots) are Finny/Ciel. I be sad. Okay, I'm at fault too because the only Kuro fic I wrote was Ciel/Sebby too, but I'm still complaining.

Day 22 - A pairing you hate and no one else understands why?

Roy/Ed from FMA. First thing, it gets in the way of my OTPs. Second thing I don't really see the chemistry there. They're probably the most popular pairings in the fandom but I'd rather stay clear of them. And then the age difference really turns me off, there's like 15 years between them and Ed is in his teens. I don't really want to think of Roy as a child molester, plus there's the unfortunate implications that come with abuse of power since Roy is Ed's superior in the military.
So, uh, no. Part of why I love FMA but won't get into the fandom, I don't like most of their favourite pairings. Likewise with Ed/Al, at least they're of an age but ick. They're one couple where I love them together, I love their interaction, but as friends. Yep, sometimes my slash goggles fail me.
renrenren3: (Text * Call Batman)

But I'm cheating because I skipped some of the scenes in the middle, so now I have to go back.

Also this season's anime are distracting me with their fabulousness.

Okay, self. Breathe. Breathe. Don't die of fangirling.

Reactions to the new SPN episode.

Oh the whole, my reaction was: meh. I suppose we can't go back to S1 ever again.

One exam down, five more to go. It's starting to look like the end, except there's still a couple more years to go so meh. And of course finishing college means I might be forced to accept that I'm an adult and move on with my life.

Wow, this sucks.

I've got about a week to prepare for the Cryptography exam (no kidding, and it's not quite as funny as it sounded at first) and all I want to do is sleep. I can't even sleep in August because I'll be studying Geometry and there's also the Algebra exam I botched up a couple of weeks ago. Urgh. Earlier today my brother mentioned that I have a weird sleeping schedule because he got up at 8am to pee and I was heading to breakfast. I kind of hate him. My sister too. They've taken over my sleeping schedule of going to sleep waaay past midnight and sleeping 'till midday.

Why can't I be a high school student again? Except for the part where high school sucked, of course. Speaking of high school, I'm stuck giving remedial math lessons to the only high schooler who likes to wake up early. First he said he'd rather meet in the morning, then he said 9am... GODDAMN MAN, I'M SLEEPY AT THAT TIME OF THE DAY! Give me a break... Last time he mentioned he saw an UFO too.

Why can't I have a normal student for once? First I had the girl who had problems with 2+2. Then the twins who were actually very studious and smart but had this tendency of asking two different things at the same time and get me confused. Now I have this guy who sees UFOs and likes to tell me about his life, which is all fine, but aren't you paying me to teach you math?

I swear I'm never getting a teaching job. It's fine doing this a couple of hours a week but I can't deal with people full-time.
renrenren3: (Hetalia * Gilbo)
I need some "derp" icon, because... derp, because.

Today I just took the most awesome test ever. First consider I'm a math student. My uni is considered quite good for math, so the level of many courses is ridiculously hard. Like, I studied three goddamn weeks for the Geometry B exam and still managed to fail. Which is considered normal, many people in my year still haven't passed Geometry B.

Today, the exam was Graph Theory. The course was, well, calling it absurd would not be enough. Nobody could understand a word of whatever was said in class. My own notes consisted in a series of formulas and uncoordinated words jotted down randomly, plus many question marks. Five or six different books were mentioned in class, none of which quite covering all of the theorems mentioned. Even our resident note-taker (a genius who writes in this awesome curly script and whose notes are often more clear than the lessons themselves) admitted that he hadn't understood many parts and his own notes were incomplete. Said notes were still photocopied and passed around.

A couple of people decided not to take the exam because they weren't feeling ready. So, this morning a dozen of us assembled for the exam. Written part, three exercises to solve in two hours. We had never seen a sample exam paper because it's the first year this professor holds the course and last year it was just oral. The exam itself was not in a classroom because the math department only has a couple of classrooms (we're usually pushed around the engineering dept). The exam was in the meeting room in the math dept. There were two long tables and we sat around them. We were literally elbow to elbow. The professor noted that there wasn't much space and said "Try not to be too obvious when copying from each other."

Then he wrote the exercises on the blackboard. Apparently he hadn't even brought exam papers. He went and stole some blank pages from the photocopier for us to write on, but I think it'd have been okay if I'd given him the answers on the back of my train ticket. The exercises were ridiculously easy. I swear, some of Professor Layton's puzzles on graphs were more taxing. The exam would rank about 50 picarats for all questions.

Now, I didn't know the answer to exercise 3 because I'd skipped the part on random graphs completely. But hey, it's okay, because five minutes into the exam the professor left to talk with a student from another course, pretty much leaving us free to discuss, come up with the best answer for all problems and write it down. I'm not kidding. We all wrote down the same exact things, and we all got top score save for a girl who said that she didn't know how to do two of the three exercises and she didn't want to copy both. She copied only the second one, solving two exercises out of three, and still got 21 out of 24.

Tomorrow I could opt to also take the oral exam to raise my score, or accept my vote of 24 out of 30. Which is quite low since my average for all courses is about 27, but I'd feel ashamed if I got a higher vote for this joke of an exam. I already feel ashamed as it is.
I-I'd like to apologize to everyone who seriously studied Graph Theory and spent time doing research and demonstrating theorems! ._________. I'm sorry!
